- Workers were kind, respectful, and tidy. Swept and cleaned at the end of each day.
- Mike was very responsive to problems. For instance, when we noticed the flooring wasn't quite level or the vanity was mounted too low he had his workers correct the issues right away.

This was our first time hiring a GC, and I'd imagine that the relationship with a contractor will always come with ups and downs. At the end of the day the most important thing, and what we appreciate about Mike, is that the communication was clear and honest.

When I found out I... read more was pregnant we knew we needed more space right away and decided to convert our garage into a one bedroom ADU, expanding the footprint by several feet and adding a storage room. A friend recommended Mike and Shawn at MDM, and we feel so fortunate that they did! The permit process alone usually takes at least several months and ours was a bit of a more complicated case. Mike was able to get our permits faster than I ever expected and had the job finished on time as promised. After he quoted us a price he told us there would be "no surprises" in our budget. Even after we discovered some unpredicted foundation issues and other bumps that come with every construction journey, Mike stayed true to his word and we never paid over what he had originally promised us.

His crew is polite, showed up on time and cleaned up at the end of every day. We needed to run plumbing lines all the way to the street, build drainage for the whole yard and essentially build an entire small house in place of our older garage. It was such a relief to be able to trust Mike and the team as they worked so I could concentrate on my pregnancy and not have to worry about managing them or any of the details. I recently inherited an ~100 year old Craftsman home and have been considering whether to remodel/rent or sell the property.  Seeing their many very positive reviews online I reached out to MDM custom remodeling for a consultation.

I connected with Shawn by phone...he was very warm, knowledgeable, inquisitive, and enthusiastic.  We set up a time to meet at the house a few days later.  During the consultation Shawn was extremely clear, direct, and candid.  It would have been VERY easy for him to simple say "Sure, no problem, we can do an amazing job here" and then start a project the scope of which is probably quite likely to exceed what I want or can afford to take on.  Instead, perhaps with the result of missing out on a job opportunity, Shawn shared his expertise very openly and honestly, didn't try to pressure or hard sell anything, and helped me to appreciate different considerations for and perspectives on this potential project.

Bottom line...Shawn was exceptionally and refreshingly honest, direct, courteous, and warm.  I'm leaning towards selling now but had or should I decide to take on this or another remodel I would ABSOLUTELY work with MDM.  Just seems like a no-nonsense, no drama, high quality operation that combines extensive craftsmanship experience/expertise and attention to detail with personal integrity and great communication.  Just adding another strong review to an already long list of the same. Mike was very helpful from the beginning, including with design and permits. We had a very clear idea of what we wanted and he was very flexible and open to our plans. He also suggested a few things that would keep the cost down and would make the house more functional. During the construction stage, he helped us select materials, negotiated prices, got discounts, ordered, and manage deliveries.

One of the most impressive aspects of working with MDM is the daily communication. We do not live in Los Angeles and could not check the remodel progress regularly. Mike sent us pictures almost every day (sometimes multiple times) to show us what they did that day and check how we wanted certain things done. Mike was super responsive to our questions and requests. Like all construction projects, it is important to stay on top of things and monitor progress to make sure everything is done to your liking. That is true of any contractor. Even though the project took a little longer than indicated at first, overall it was pretty efficient and a lot was accomplished in a short amount of time. They were able to start right away and kept things moving along.

The professionals that Mike hired and coordinated were very respectful and worked well together, especially after the pandemic started. They always wore masks. His cabinet maker was able to custom built all our cabinets exactly the way we designed them.
